Betsy and George

Betsy Ross and George Washington were abandoned by their owners on some property that they had been renting. Fortunately for these two cute donkeys, some caring neighbors made sure that they had food and water so they wouldn't suffer.

From what I can tell, they are mother and son, the mother (Bets) appears to be under 5 years of age and the jack (George) is maybe one year old. Obviously George has not been handled AT ALL and the Betsy has had limited handling. Betsy will walk up to me for very limited petting and scratching but George will not tolerate touching at all other then a sneaky pat on the nose. They are both friendly in spite of their shyness and neither of them have shown any sign of aggression while I've worked with them so I think it wouldn't take too long to get them to overcome their shyness.

George needs to be castrated, normally I have that procedure done before they are adopted out but if someone that I can trust to get him castrated after adoption wants him I will let him go in tact, otherwise he will have to stay here until he is tamed enough to be handled and castrated.

Bella

Bella is a very sweet, loving palomino mare that came to us by recommendation from one of my Horse Blanket Services clients. She had previously owned the mare and sold her to a friend. The friend no longer wanted Bella and decided to take her to the auction so she could "get a couple hundred dollars out of her". Luckily for Bella, the lady was willing to bring her to HART so be placed in a new home.

Once Bella arrived here the first thing we noticed that is she had "no wheels". Have you ever heard the term "no foot, no horse?" Well, poor Bella had terribly sore, chipped feet and could not tolerate walking on hard ground at all. Because she is such a sweet, friendly, gentle well trained not to mention beautiful horse, there was a lot of interest in her and she was placed in a wonderful home in Newberg.

When Bella's new family came to pick her up, a teeny 5 year old girl wanted to lead her out of the pasture. Bella patiently followed behind this tiny girl, as we headed toward the gate the girl tripped and fell down right in front of Bella who instantly stopped and put her nose down as if to say "get up little girl and let's get going." It was one of those precious moments that makes me so thankful that I am able to help these horses find better homes.

Bella's new owner is working diligently together with her farrier to get her feet ironed out, get some weight off her and get her back under the saddle packing children around.

Felipe' the Miniature Donkey

Felipe' came to us from Camp Tillikum West of Newberg, he and his buddy a little Jennette had been donated to the camp for the children to pet and enjoy. Unfortunately, little Felipe' had not been castrated and with being a donkey and having a girlfriend, his actions were a bit unsettling to the camp supervisors and inappropriate for the children. Within one week of arriving at HART Rescue we performed a surgery that we are very well known for doing that I like to refer to as 'brain surgery' (castration).

After a couple weeks of recovery time Felipe' was allowed out into the pasture with my two old mules so they could teach him a few things about manners and let him know under no uncertain terms that approaching a lady from behind with unsavory intentions is not to be tolerated. It didn't take my good mules long to educate Felipe' and he was then allowed to be with the rest of the herd.

Felipe' went on to form a relationship with Buster, our resident paint gelding where the two of them took turns chasing each other all over the pasture and playing. They provided hours of entertainment for our hay crew, volunteers and visitors here at HART.

This sweet little donkey then moved on to be adopted by the Alpenrose Dairy to live the rest of his life in luxury at their Story Book Lane to be loved and be doted on by hundreds of children and to further his career as the star donkey in their live Nativity Scene exhibit at the dairy.

Two new pathetic arrivals at HART Rescue

HUMMER

This is poor Hummer, he was pulled out of a very unfortunate situation where he was not being fed properly and had very little room to move around. He is severely emaciated, I rated him at a body score of 2 1/2 and his feet are in horrible condition right now. Hummer is very sweet and kind and stands at the gate waiting for love and attention. Hummer is only 4 years old but is wise well beyond his years, I didn't put a tape on him but I am estimating he is just over 17 hands. I was told that his previous owner and her children used to ride him around the yard.

Hummer will be looking for a new home as soon as he is stabilized and well enough to be moved. He will need to be placed with someone that has experience with draft horses and is able to teach him proper ground manners.

GYPSY

Gypsy is a medicine hat pinto, she is 5 years old, approximately 14 1/2 hands high. Gypsy is rated at a body score of 3. Gypsy was showing some signs of aggression when I inspected her out at the site and I have been told by a person that knows the horse that she has a past of showing food aggression. She has not been aggressive since she has arrived at HART but she has only been here for one day and I have been just leaving them alone other than petting if they come to the gate. I am hoping that after she realizes she will no longer need to worry about where her next meal is coming from she will settle down a bit. Just on her first night here she was standing quietly at the gate enjoying some loving and scratching while completely relaxed.

A neighbor from where these two horses came from has generously offered to pay for 30 days of training with a kind, gentle trainer for Gypsy. After she has had some time to recover and put on some weight she will be sent to the trainer who will evaluate her aggression issues and hopefully start her under saddle.

Bad News for HART

After spending SEVERAL HOURS out at the site I was forced to come to the determination that the horses were not in bad enough shape to justify seizing them at this point. The horses are for the most part in poor condition and are being kept in deplorable conditions BUT I know that on the day I was there (today) it is not bad enough that we could seize them and win our case in court. It absolutely breaks my heart that I had to turn my back and walk away from 10 pregnant mares and 5 stallions, I'm completely sick to my stomach about this.

On one hand I wish I had waited to send out my email for help until the horses were here but on the other hand I knew that I needed help to be here TODAY to take are of these horses if I had been able to bring them home. I was confident that the deal was going to go down as the sheriff assured me that the conditions were terrible. We had a legal warrant but I didn't want to blow our case by seizing these horses and having to give them back to their abusive owners.

We will continue to monitor this case and believe me, the INSTANT I feel we have enough grounds to seize, those horses WILL BE SEIZED.

I wan to thank Tammy and the girls for all of the time they spent out here today getting the barn ready for this group of horses and Gwen for bringing out grain, alfalfa pellets and wormer.

Help and Foster and Parmanent Homes Needed ASAP

HART Rescue is in urgent need of permanent or foster homes for several horses. The reason for this sudden need is that I am going out to assist the Sheriff serve a warrant and seize 15 horses that includes 5 stallions that are in horrible conditions and terrible health. This will put HART way beyond capacity of the facilities and my body.

If you can adopt or foster one of our current resident horses Pokey, Raja, Madeline and Giggles are all wonderful horses and ready to go. They are all healthy and sound, Pokey is the only one that is broke to ride. He has had tons of ground work done by a natural horsemanship trainer and about 10 rides where he has done wonderfully, he walks and trots around the arena completely relaxed. The other three are all very gentle and healthy but only halter broke, they have all been saddled but that is about it.

Minis that need homes are Wolley Bear, Foot Pony and Little Red One. They are all gentle but a little shy. I believe I have homes for Rambo and Nemo but I will keep you posted.

After the new 15 arrivals have been triage, documented, evaluated and healthy enough to place we will also need foster homes for them. They will be wards of the court until the case is settled. I can give you all of the details at a later date.

Since we are being slammed way beyond capacity with the arrival of these 15 desperate horses HART will be also is in need of good quality hay, alfalfa, grain, stall bedding and especially PANELS as I do not have enough stalls for all of them. Help of the labor variety is also very much appreciated as these horses are currently in DEPLORABLE conditions. They are all going to need to be bathed, their feet done, wormed and so on. I'm thinking that since I don't know what time the warrant will be signed by the judge let's hold off most volunteers until Monday. I could use some select help later this afternoon and evening to help get the horses settled in, fed and whatnot. If you have volunteered here in the past when things have been hecktic, know where everything is in the barn and can work without supervision than you would be a good one to come help later today.

Six New Miniature Horses Have Arrived at HART Rescue

HART received six new miniature horses from a private party in Grants Pass. If you are interested in adopting one or more of these adorable little fur balls please let me know!

Lilapp (pronounced Lap) was a stallion upon arrival at HART Rescue but we all know how I feel about stallions in my barn! He has already been castrated and is recovering quite well. Lilapp was very shy when he got here, would strongly avoid contact and shake with fear when caught. I have been spending a lot of one on one time with the little bugger and he is warming up to people very quickly. My niece is had decided to make Lilapp her senior project. I believe her goal is to train him for in hand trail, in hand jumping, showman and halter, he will then be a very nice, adoptable little guy.

Little black pony with clubbed foot. This sweet little FURBALL is a kind, gentle gal. She has a clubbed foot that needs extra trimming to keep in check and severe locking stifles so if she runs around too much she will drag her hind leg for a little while. This is not a painful condition and does not in any way inhibit her quality of life.

Little Huggy Bear Pony

Huggy Bear has the same sweet personality of the Club Foot pony, she just needs someone to help her out with all that HAIR!!!!

Little Red One

Yeah I know, I'm terrible at coming up with creative names, with time I'm sure I'll come up with something better. Red is VERY SHY and needs a lot of one on one attention. She is sweet and willing so I'm sure it wouldn't take much to bring her around. Yes, I know she is dirty, I took this photo before she received her "welcome to HART" brushing.

Mom and Baby

Mom is a little more refined than the other two black minis, of course since there was an adorable baby in the stall with her to capture all of my attention I didn't get very good photograph of her, sorry about that! Anyway, Mom is very friendly and gentle, she will make a nice mini for anyone. Baby is VERY SHY and had very little handling before arriving at HART. Fortunately, this adorable duo is currently in foster care with a wonderful family that is teaching baby the essentials to be a good little horse.

HART Rescue State of the Union

Well winter is finally here and unfortunately the economy is still in the tank. People are struggling to make ends meet and having to make some difficult decisions about their lifestyle choices. Unfortunately, as you all already know this means cutting back expenses and horses are a very expensive luxury.

Sadly, I get phone calls and emails every day from desperate people needing to find homes for their horses that they can no longer care for. This is one of the most difficult parts of being a horse rescue because I simply CANNOT take them all. Most of the time I end up providing council on their options for euthanasia if the horse is old or injured.

I do get some donations that are very much appreciated but people need to remember that even though HART Rescue is a non profit corporation, this is ME here running and funding this organization. There is only so much I can do in a day and only so many horses I can house and care for. Any and all offers of help and donations are WELCOME AND APPRECIATED and I thank you all very much for what you have done for HART Rescue.

This summer we were lucky enough to have two very large hay fields donated to HART. I spend countless hours on my tractors harvesting this hay, in total we put up over 80 tons of hay ~ 40 of that was from the donated fields. If it wasn't for generous donations like this I would NOT be able to rescue as many horses as I do, this is a HUGE savings for HART. One of the donated fields needs to be sprayed for broadleaf this spring, any donations of broadleaf killer would be GREATLY APPRECIATED and will save HART a lot of money. Putting all of this hay in the barn takes a lot of hard work so if you would like to donate some muscle power during the harvest that would also save HART some money, this summer HART payed out over $1000.00 for hay help, diesel and baling twine but we got about $4000.00 worth of hay in the barn for the rescue horses!!!!!!

UP FOR ADOPTION

Raja. He is a 6 year old registered Saddlebred with champion bloodlines. He started out to be a senior project for a nice young lady, and after being sold a time or two ended up in the hands of a selfish person who though her only option for this horse that she could not sell and make a buck on was to take him out into the woods and dump him. Thanks to one VERY BRAVE young lady who recognized the horse, the person that dumped him and his buddy Cherokee got to spend the night in jail and is now facing the consequences of her actions. Raja is a NICE HORSE, there is NOTHING wrong with him other than he ended up in the wrong hands. He is not broke to ride but he is very gentle and I am starting him under saddle as soon as he gets up to a healthy weight. Raja is up for adoption for a $200.00 adoption fee.

Flair is yet another victim of the times. She is a 1 1/2 year old mustang that was left to fend for herself. She had been part of a herd of mustangs owned by an older gentleman who could no longer care for the horses. The herd was taken but somehow she was left behind. Flair was not handled at all when I got her but she is so sweet and friendly that with just a small amount of attention I was able to halter break her, put a blanket on her and pick up her feet. Fair really wants to be someones best friend. She has a hernia that needs to be fixed and her teeth need work. This will all be done this Friday. The estimated cost of her surgery and dental work is $500.00 to $700.00. If you would like to donate towards the cost of her procedures you can send funds to Carlton Vet, c/o HART Rescue, 230 South Pine Street, Carlton OR 97111. After recovery, Flair will be up for adoption for a $200.00 adoption fee.

I'm sure many of you remember Madeline and Giggles from the Rice/Moore case. They were both adopted out but unfortunately, their adoptive family could no longer take care of them so they were returned to HART for re-adoption. They are both sound, healthy and ready to start under saddle. I have been working with both of them, had them both saddled and they are going great.

NEW ARRIVALS

I have a truckload of new miniature horses coming in the next couple of weeks. Once they arrive I am going to call an "All Hands on Deck" for help. These little guys are going to need to be socialized, vaccinated, wormed, brushed, feet done and evaluated for adoption. This will be an excellent opportunity for the 4-H groups that need to get their community service time in as this is much more fun than cleaning stalls!!! Madeline and Giggles are back and need new homes

These two wonderful mustang/quarter horse mares were adopted but their owners could no longer take care of them so they were returned to HART to find new homes. They came to us in the Rice/Moore case back in the spring of 2009. They are both very sweet and sociable and need to find a new home where they can be loved forever. If they are not adopted out I am going to start them under saddle this winter.

This is Madeline, it is really had to get a good photo of her because as soon as she sees me coming, she comes running for love and attention.

And this is Giggles all grown up, she is a little shy but warms right up to you once she is comfortable.

Flair

Flair was abandoned by his owner, she was being temporarily cared for by a good Samaritan who could not keep her and asked us to take her over. She is a one year old mustang filly who has not been handled very much at all. In spite of her rough beginning and lack of handling, she is a very friendly little girl who wants to be your friend. Within a few hours of having her here at HART I was able to get a halter on her and convince her that following me around would be a fun game that is rewarded with yummy treats.

Flair has a hernia that needs to be surgically repaired, we are working on funding for the surgery and will have it done as soon as possible. If you would like to help with the cost of her surgery, please send your donations to Carlton Veterinary Hospital c/o HART Rescue.

Two Horses Found Loose off Turner Creek Road

These two horses were found wandering loose 3 weeks ago outside of Yamhill, Oregon above Pike Road. They are both pretty thin and have long feet but appear to be otherwise healthy and gentle. After the Oregon Statute required 4 week period they will be available for adoption.

I am guessing that they are both broke to ride as they both have white hair scars from poor fitting saddles and cinch galls. Before they are adopted I will of course check them both out in the arena and out on the trail so I can give some sort of idea as to their training.

This is a nice tall horse I'm guessing 15.2 hands, his head and croup shape hint around that he might have some pleasure type breeding in him. He always carries his tail up and off to the side so before adoption he will be check out by the vet to make sure he doesn't have a back or hip injury that will prevent him from being sound. He is a sweet, friendly horse and gets pushed around a bit by the bay. He cribbed when he was in the arena but since I have moved him into an outside pen I have not seen him crib.

This guy has a petite build, I'm guess he is a quarter horse/arab mix maybe and about 14.2 hands. He bosses the other horse around at feeding time but since they have been here with regular feedings for three weeks that has subsided quite a bit.

HART Rescue Goes Through the Yamhill Parade

Every once in awhile we have some spare time to do something fun. We decided to take a few miniature horses through our local small town parade. We handed out candy and coloring books, everyone had a great time.

Here is Kelcey and Sadie carrying the banner. Kelcey adopted Snoot two years ago, she still keeps her at HART.

Here is my grandson Riley and I handing out treats and coloring books.

And here is my step daughter Martine leading Gigi. We took 3 gentle minis so the kids could pet them all throughout the parade. They were a big hit.

This was so fun that we are thinking of doing it again next year with HART T-shirts and lots more minis for petting.

Centurian

This is Sarah and Centurian. This horse was donated to HART early this spring, Sarah fell immediately in love with him and adopted him. She spent a lot of time rehabilitating Centurian and trying to regain his trust. It took her a long time and true dedication to build his trust and courage back up and just look at the rewards that she is now reaping with him. He is healthy and happy and they both look wonderful! Studly is ready to move in with his new adoptive family

This is one of those 'warm and fuzzy' happy endings for a horse that we rescued. Studly had been a herd sire and was your typical stallion with their lovely stallion intentions. After a full year of rehabilitation, court dates and waiting we finally got the forfeiture hearing and legal ownership of him and his pasture mates. Immediately, his castration was scheduled and went very well. After he was giving a chance to heal up and get some of the testosterone out of his system, we started introducing him to other horses in an effort to socialize him, that went very well and he now has a pasture mate that he gets along with great. Then, we started riding him and that is also going very very well. Today, he gets some dental work done and soon his new owner will pick him up and take him home. I like to call this the 'full meal deal', rescue, rehab, castrate, socialize, ride, health and dental check ADOPTION.

Pokey is Ready for Adoption!

Pokey is a really nice little two year old gelding that needs to find a new home. He was rescued from a terrible situation and held here at HART as evidence for nearly a YEAR before all of the horses from that case were forfeited. When he arrived at HART he was a body scale 1 ½ on the Heineke body scoring chart as a one year old so he’s had a pretty rough start in life.

He is now completely recovered, castrated and ready to move on to a new home where he will be loved and trained. Because of his age and rough start, I highly recommend that he not be started under saddle for at least another year.

Pokey being only 2 years old is still rather small in stature, I’m guessing he is 14 hands high. His mother (also seized in the same case) was a huge, muscular mare with a wonderful personality, she stood roughly 15 hands. His sire (also seized in the same case and now castrated) is just over 14 hands and is also an awesome, smooth gaited wonderful horse. Even as an aged stallion as a herd sire, he never gave me any reason to be concerned for my safety.

Pokey is halter broke, gets right in the horse trailer, stands tied, is good with his feet and absolutely LOVES attention, he is always the first one at the gate. We have been working on his ground manners and teaching him to be a civilized young horse. He is very smart and a quick learner. He doesn’t mind being left alone and will often times isolate himself from the other horses although he LOVES to roughhouse and play (nearly non stop) with my mule.

This is Pokey fully recovered and ready to go to a new home.

This is his dam, he is the spitting image of her, I'm you all remember Tease.

I Have Added A New Tack For Sale Section to the Blog

Make sure you check out my new Tack For Sale Section on the right hand side of the blog page. I have added a few saddles and will continue to add some of my more choice tack items. I always have a very large selection of bridles, reins, bits, saddle pads, horse blankets etc for sale at low prices.

This is how I raise funds for the rescue so please, if you have anything that you need ask me, I probably have it!

This one ended up with a very happy ending!

The owner of this sweet young gelding had fallen into hard times and us no longer able to take proper care of him. He was doing everything he was financially able to keep the poor horse but it just wasn't enough. A concerned citizen called the Sheriff's Office about the horse's circumstances, we followed through with a site investigation and interview with the owner of the horse. The poor owner admitted that what he was feeding the horse wasn't enough but it was all he was able to do. He had tried to sell him with no luck. We could tell that he felt terrible about the situation and wanted to do what was right for the horse so we simply asked him to forfeit ownership and allow the horse to be placed in a better home.

Fortunately for this horse, we were brought in BEFORE things got terrible. Yes, he is malnurished but he is far from DEAD and will have a complete recovery. He has already been placed in a WONDERFUL home in fact the person that called the Sheriff's Office offered to take care of the horse and that is who ended up with him. They have named him Chance because now he has a second chance at life.

This is an excellent example of a BAD situation turned GOOD, this is the way I like them to turn out.

If you starve a horse to death, you WILL go to jail.

I apologize for the graphic nature of the photo that is in this entry but I think it is very important for people to see just exactly what I deal with here at HART Rescue. This poor horse had been laying out in a field for several hours slowly dieing of starvation when some good Samaritans called me in to help it. The owner of the horse was unwilling to even acknowledge that the horse was suffering. Long story short, the Sheriff's were called in, the poor horse was put out of it's misery, and the owner ended up warming a bench in the county jail for a few hours until she was bailed out.

Two New Donkeys Arrive Here at HART

I had just finally come to terms with placing Charles and Franchesca into an adoptive home. They were very difficult for me to give up because I had grown so attached to them but I know that the more animals that I keep as permanent residences the less that I can save.

Charles and Franny had only been gone for three days when I got a call from the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office asking me to go out on an animal at large call two pick up two little donkeys. These two adorable little critters had been wandering around Dopp Road between Newberg and Yamhill for at least a couple of weeks before a kind person in the area corralled them and called the Sheriff.

They are both in good health, appear to be young and other then one of them with feet a little overgrown they appear to have been well cared for. I put an ad on Craigslist and in the Newberg Graphic lost and found to try to locate their owners. :( They are both gentle, well behaved and craving attention. If their owner is not found, they will be up for adoption in 90 days in accordance with Oregon Satute.

Here is Turbo, named for her ability to run like the wind once the gate is opened. She is quickly figuring out that when the gate is opened, that means more groceries are coming, not that it's time to make a run for it.

Here is little Dodge, name so due to his habit of dodging the rope when I put one around his neck to take him out of the stall for the day, the silly little sucker.

A New Update for Big Ruth from the Beavercreek Case

I'm sure you all remember Big Ruth from the Beavercreek case last spring.

Well, she has been in foster care for the past several months and is doing very well.

Here is a photo of her feet in April.

Even after intense trimming for two months they are still splayed out and her heals are still crushed.

Here she is from November 20th, what a DIFFERENCE!

A new update on Shadow and Maryia!

Shadow just continues to amaze me. She is doing well on her recovery. We are trimming her once a week. Tweaking her feet little at a time to encourage the rolled under side to grow more normally.

She is now able to go into the "Sand Paddock" area. It is firmer foot that the rubber. She was a little tender footed the first few days but got over that quickly. She does not trot yet but can boogie at the walk with no lameness.

She is very sweet with all people. But she and Mariah have a new roommate and little Shadow will pin her ears and make ugly faces at her. Very funny to see her be such a little toughie.

Shadow had her teeth floated on June 7th. Jerry Schmidt, Balanced Equine Dentistry volunteered his time and did her teeth. She had a retained cap (at 13 years old!) he pulled. She does have one funny upper incisor that is shorter than the rest and seems to be twisted sideways. Her molars were not too bad. Jerry balanced her out and she is good to go.

Shadow has shed out and is so cute. She has little white freckles sprinkled over her hinny. A funny thing she does is in the morning after I feed her hay she will almost always take a "nap" in the hay. She plops down in the hay and eats the hay all around her. I have seen her lay flat, reach her head back and pull more hay to her. Then rolls up and munch away. She is so sweet, funny, and demanding! You should hear her neigh (squeak) in the morning. I am never fast enough to bring her breakfast, according to her. :-) She is a doll and doing well.

Mariah is doing well. Mariah and I had a big break thru last Friday. She allowed me to trim her front feet with no one holding her halter. This is huge trust issue for her. Back feet we are still working on but it is coming. On Monday she came right up to me and asked to be petted and stayed with me for awhile!

She is still very sassy but I see her coming around and understanding not all people are bad. Every time I am with her I try to do something nice for her. Mostly scratching ... her favorite spots are her shoulders and under her neck. Carrots are a good thing also. She is just so smart and cute.

She continues to do well on her feet. Walks, trots, and canters well. She has shed out beautifully. I love her little black spots in her white splashes.

Moby

We have a new kid on the block here at HART Rescue. Moby came to us just yesterday. His owners for some reason were not taking proper care of him so he lost quite a bit of weight has was seriously lame in all four feet. Fortunately for Moby, his previous owner checked up on him and took him back. Unfortunately, she was not in a financial position to take care of him so she brought him here to HART for rehabilitation and to find a new home.

When his previous owner found him in poor condition she immediately took action. She made sure that the people had the proper feed for him, called out a vet and a farrier at her expense and stayed in daily contact with his current owners. The farrier guessed that he might have abscesses in all four feet but didn't find any pockets. They put some special shoes with medication packs on him. The vet prescribed butte and ulcer medication. After 3 weeks his owners told the previous owner that they would not/could not take care of Moby and wanted to be rid of him. That is how he ended up here at HART.

When he arrived yesterday he was moving out pretty well but was still on butte. I decided to not give him any butte last night because it is so hard on their stomachs so this morning he is a bit sore on the right front at the jog in the arena. He has 4 more weeks before his shoes need redone so I'm hoping to find out more information then. Based on the description of how he was reacting it sounds more like stress founder to me then abscesses.

Moby is a SWEETHEART He is almost 20 years old, registered appendix quarter horse gelding. He is broke to ride and in face is very well broke and gentle for anyone to ride. Hopefully I will be able to get him sound again and ready for adoption.

Unfortunately, Moby's condition was so advanced that we were unable to make him confortable enough to be even pasture sound so we were forced to make the difficult decision to put him down.

A Quick Update

It has come to my attention that there is some concern regarding the affiliation of HART Rescue and Sound Equine Options. I want to take this opportunity to assure everyone that HART Rescue in no way supports the slaughter of horses. My involvement with Sound Equine Options is strictly to support a low cost euthenasia option for people who cannot afford to do the right thing for their horse when the unfortunate time comes that it needs to be put down.

The mission and goal here at HART is to serve the community by providing a safe place for abused horses to recover and live until they can be adopted out.

I have been struggling for the past several months with if I should invest in good bookkeeping software to keep track of HART’s expenses, donations and whatnot. I have always told everyone that I have an open book policy regarding the financial status of HART but it’s awfully hard to stand up to that promise if I don’t have adequate software to track everything. So, after thinking and pondering long and hard on the matter I finally decided that since we did so well at the Canby Tack Sale, now would be a good time to spend a little money and invest in a good software package.

I decided to go with a Quickbooks based program because I already know that software inside and out since I use it at work and fortunately, Quickbooks has a software program specifically designed for non profits. I am excited to get it all downloaded, enter all of my past financial transactions and donations and be able to keep a printout of everything available to anyone who asks.

The Canby Tack Sale was another huge success for HART. We sold over $1200.00 worth of tack and visited with several old friends and made a lot of new friends and contacts. My booth was so busy for the entire sale that I never got to unfold my chair to sit down, not even for a second. Thank you very much Sarah for being there all day to help me sell tack, educate people on HART Rescue and hand out business cards.

I had some picture story boards at the sale and they were a big attraction for many people. I only wish that I had more time to visit with the people and their children as they looked at the photos and read their stories. Thank you so much Debbie for coming down a couple of hours to help out with that part, I really appreciated it.

We also made some space for our newly formed Sound Equine Options group to set up an educational story board to introduce ourselves to the public and let them know about our upcoming low cost euthanasia clinics and future plans for a hay bank and horse rescue registration and accountability program.

The best part of the entire sale was the amazing amount of people that approached us as the sale was ending and donated their unwanted horse tack items or asked what they could do to help out in the future. The generosity and genuine caring and appreciation of what I do from everyone were almost overwhelming. I would head out to the trailer to load up my leftover tack and when I returned to my booth there would be a large box of miscellaneous items on my table that someone had dropped off. I want to make sure that everyone knows that any and all donations no matter how big or small is always greatly appreciated and even if I can only sell an item for one or two dollars, it still makes a difference. Everything will be washed, cleaned, repaired, oiled and salvaged in the best way possible to raise funds for the rescue.

Please remember that although donations are greatly appreciated, I do also buy tack for resale so if you have items leftover from the sale that you would like to sell, please email or call me and if I can, I will buy everything you have to resell.

My only regret of the sale is that I didn’t have a camera to take a photo of the booth but I’m afraid that even if I did have my camera there, I would never have had the time to take a picture! So, here for your enjoyment is a photo of my grandson Riley leading his miniature horse Gigi out of the barn so they can go for a ride.

All of my bridles are priced by each piece so that if you want to mix and match you still know exactly how much you are spending. I also have a nice selection of saddles and tons of other horse related items.

Remember, I raise funds for HART Rescue by buying and selling tack and I also accept donations so if you have any tack you don't need anymore please bring it to my booth for donation or I'll buy it if I can. 100% of the proceeds is spent on the rescue horses medical care, feed and supplies.

Updates on Studly, Snoot, Big Mare, Lightening and Amber

Here is an updated photo of my dear Studly.

I haven't ridden him yet as I'm waiting for the case to be closed and castration but he is definitely a very personable horse from the ground. It's easy to forget that he is a stallion because he is so gentle. Studly thoroughly enjoys being brushed and loved on and is not shy about showing his appreciation for the attention.

Amber has been returned to HART because her adoptive owner reported she had food aggression issues with the goats that she was pastured with. I now have her out with permanent HART resident Gigi and the two mini donkeys Charles and Franchesca and they are getting along great. I have decided that Amber is going to be a permanent resident of HART so I have plenty of teeny minis for the children to love on when they vistit.

I received a phone call update on Lightening the other day. His family reported that he is doing AWSOME and they absolutely love him. They are looking forward to training him to be ridden next year.

The family that adopted Big Marehave reported that she is absolutely perfect and they love her dearly. She was such an awsome horse that it was really hard for me to let her go but I just can't keep them all.

Snoot still lives here at HART as a boarder. Her owner is curently training her for OHSET and had been doing some trail riding. She has turned out to be a nice horse.

It's time for Pal to meet the big boys!

I've decided that it's about time to start weaning PAL. I always like to make the weaning process as low stress as possible for the mother and the foal and so far my method has worked pretty darn well for me. For starters, I move the mare and foal into a pasture with one or two gentle aged geldings. For Pal I choose Buster and Fritz as they are gentle giants. Today seemed like a good day to do it so here is Pal introducing himself to Buster and Fritz while Mom calmly eats hay in the background.

I couldn't have asked for a smoother introduction. I'm going to leave all of these guys together for a couple of days and then I will put Pal and the gentlemen in the arena (the safest environment possible) and take Mom away for a bit to see how they react. Normally the foal will have made some great new friends so he won't fuss very much for his mother. If he doesn't make too much of a stink I'll go ahead and move Mom down to the PAL Ranch so they can't hear each other call. Once all is calm with the guys, I'll move them all back out to the pasture and get on with things.

Gearing up for the Winter

Well summer is rapidly comming to an end. I love the cool air of fall, the return of the green in the fields and the sweet smell of the fall rains but also fear what this winter will bring us. There are still hundreds of thousands of people out of work and and several thousand of them are finding their unemployment benefits tapped out. This not only means that more people can't afford to feed and care for their animals, but it also means that they can no longer afford to make donations to charities.

I have been working hard this past several weeks to be as ready as possible for the onset of rescue cases that I fear will come our way. New fences have been built, shelters are being reinforced, mud control put into place, hay is being stored and supplies are being gathered. I hope and pray that I will not be forced to turn any animals away this winter but have a terrible feeling in my gut that there will be more then I can handle on my own.

Here is a photo of the new no climb horse fence that we put around our winter sacrafice areas. This was a lot of hard work and expensive but definately necessary. Now barring bubble wrapping everything, this is a very horse safe area.

One of the things that I do here at HART to raise funds is buy and sell tack and horse related items. I have recently purchased a really cute little two horse Logan Ranger II slant load trailer. If you or anyone you know is interested in the trailer, please call or email me here at HART. I also have several nice saddles and tons of other tack items. We will have a booth at the Canby Tack Sale in October so make sure you come and check us out. I'm also going to work on putting together a tack for sale area here on the blog. Be patient!

In addition, if you have any horse related items you would like to donate or sell let me know and I'll come pick them up and give you a reciept for your taxes.

Hopefully soon Studly, Pokey, Boss and Pal will be up for adoption. We are having a forteiture hearing on the 29th. This also means that Studly, Pokey and Pal will have to be castrated so if you can spare an extra $1.00 or two, please send it to Carlton Vet c/o HART and it will be used to help pay for the three castrations.

The defendants of the Sheridan Seven horses Studly, Boss, Madeline, Giggles, Tease, Pokey and Big Ruth were sentenced and very VERY soon all of these horses (except the ones already spoken for) will be up for adoption!!!!!

The ones I have left are: Tease, Pokeyand Studly. Boss and PAL may also be available, the person that originally spoke for them is thinking it over. She wants to be sure that they go to the very best home available where they will be treasured and loved as much as they deserve.

Pokey and Studly will need to be castrated before they leave HART and will have an adoption fee of $200.00 each. Tease will have an adoption fee of $100.00. Boss and PAL (if available) will have an adoption fee of $300.00.

Two Pigs and A Duck

These adorable creatures came to live at HART a few months ago. I haven't been able to add them to my blog because they were being held as evidence for the Humane Society and they asked their case to remain private. Well, fortunately for the pigs and the duck, their case is finally done and they are now up for adoption! Anyone interested an adopting this interesting trio will need to go through the Humane Society and their adoption proceedures. We would like them to stay together.

Here is the female piggy, she is very friendly, will take food out of your hand and stand to be pet. If you scratch her tummy, she'll roll over to give you better access.

And here she is with her friend the duck.

When these guys first arrived, the duck was bonded with the male pig but he seems that with the onset of spring, love is in the air and he has turned his eye to the sweet little female.

Here is the male, he is not fond of being touched or even looked at but he does come running and dinner time when you call pig, pig, pig.

The mini horses

A lot of people have been asking me for updates on all of the minis. I'm sorry I haven't had the time to put frequent updates on my blog.

All but the two critial minis have been adopted out and are currently living in their new homes. Some of them have sent me photos of them and I'll get that all put on here as soon as I can.

Shadow and Mariah are staying with a vet/farrier in Sherwood and will remain there until they feet are healed enough for them to come back to HART.

I promise, I will get their photos and stories put up by the end of this week.

IT'S A BOY!

Last night Boss gave birth to a beautiful, healthy colt! Mom and baby are both doing great. The vet will be out this afternoon to draw blood and do a wellness check on them both just to make sure. Boss is a wonderful, attentive mother and is kind enough to allow me to mess around with her little newborn without worry.

I decided to name him PAL of my HART. PAL is for the PAL Ranch in Mcminnville, the owners of the ranch donated the use of the property and barns to my rescue and expressed a desire to adopt Boss and her unborn foal several weeks ago. PAL stands for People Animals Love. The HART part of his name of course is for HART Rescue.

I can't tell who the sire is because he's the spitting image of his dam!

Julie, I hope you like that name. I know I said you should name him but PAL of my HART just seemed so perfect! You and Hanna can give him a good barn name.

Today was an exciting day for HART

We had several visitors.

My old buddy Jeanne Dougal came by with her mom to drop off some donations of used horse tack to sell and or use for the rescued horses and some new supply items for the rescue.

Pat Swansik picked up Fabio to take him to his appointment for brain surgery at Willamette Valley Equine THAT MEANS ONE LESS STALLION AT HART! I'm so sorry Fabio but it just had to be done. Good luck old man and we'll see you back here on Friday. In case you are confused, Fabio used to be referred to as Eclipse but we changed his name to Fabio after he made it quite apparent that he was a ladies man and wanted no mistake of the matter, the poor little guy just couldn't understand why we wouldn't let him be with the ladies! Oh and "brain surgery" is just a another term for castration. Yeeks!

We also had a visit from a couple of 4-H groups from Yamhill County, the Red Hill Riders and the River Bandits.

Several kids and parents spent a couple of hours here at HART brushing all of the horses, cleaning out the arena and visiting with me. The ponies all enjoyed the attention from all of the girls.

Two New Residences to Join the Minis

I recieved an email from a person giving me all of the information on the 15 minis at HART so I have updated the description below. She asks that they all please keep their given names and I intend to honor her request.

Yesterday I had two different 4-h groups and several other individual people come out and help me finsih all off the work on all of the minis. They are all now completely free of their manuar balls, feet trimmed, eyes treated, wormed, flea dipped and delouced.

Here is a photo of my along with a couple of the awsome helpers I had yesterday.

Little Shadow Dancer is still so weak and fragil that we can only work on her for a few minutes at a time so she still has a lot of manuar balls to be removed but she is difinately more comfortable.

Bandit and Gambler went to their new home at Project Spirit a couple days ago.

Karina, Jem, Sparkle, Majorette and Shasta all went to their new home yesterday. They are living very close to HART so I will be able to check on them every day.

Wednesday, a representative from at vet in Newberg that is donating two floats is comming out to look at all of the remaining minis to see what two need them the most. She is going to haul those two directly to the clinic to have them taken care of right away. Thank you guys for that!

HART always has a no questions asked return policy on all of these little minis and any other horse or animal that is adopted so no matter what if it doesn't work out I will take the horse back and find it another suitable home. I also check in with my adoptive homes as often as possible weather it be a quick drive by, phone call or email just to make sure that everything is going well. I encourage adoptive families to send me updated stories and photos of their horses so I can put them on the blog.

Donations continue to come in and I am so grateful for each and every one of them no matter how big or small. We have plenty of grain here at HART for the horses so our greatest need now is pelleted stall bedding, money to Carlton Vet for vet care or money directly to HART for site improvements, the porta potty, the electric bill and other larger items that are more difficult to donate.

It has become obvious to me that I need to set up an account at a feed store and since WILCO is completely uncooperative with things like that I have decided to move my business to a small, family owned feed store in McMinville called Valley Feed. Just as soon as I can break away from the ranch I'll go down there and make arrangements for the account so people will be able to choose between sending money to Carlton Vet or Valley Feed. I think this will also give me an opportunity to use the combined donations to the feed store to help buy some of the larger ticket items that I have such a huge need for at this time.

Here is a shot of some of the minis enjoying the sun from my arena the day we brought them here. I'll get some more photos of them today and tomorrow.

The defendant in the case of the 15 miniature horses signed a full relinquishment of the horses over to the Sheriff's Office and I have been given permission to adopt out all except the seven that had the really bad feet. This is so exciting and I am very happy to report that almost all of those minis have been spoken for and will be placed in their new homes very soon!!!!!

I have several 4-h kids and a few other people comming tomorrow to help me finish getting all of the minis cleaned up, trimmed, wormed and brushed before they are sent to their new homes. My barn is going to be very full of helpful people and I am looking forward to it.

Here is the best news, the donations comming in here have been PLENTYFUL and very GENEROUS!!!!!! Chance's Miniature Horse Rescue (CMHR)had sent a generous amount of money to Carlton Veterinary Services to help with the vet care for these special little horses. All of this just gives me the chills and when I got the phone call from the vet to let me know I cried. THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE! The ponies will be well served because of you.

It's been crazy busy around here with trying to get the horses comfortable and creating a pasture area for them. The news crews have been keeping us pretty busy for the past two days. It's hard to believe that a one or two minute story takes two hours of interviewing and shooting. We were on channels 2, 6 and 8 and two different newspapers have come out also. She has a potential home.

A very busy weekend

Yesterday HART assisted in serving yet another warrant and seized 15 more miniature horses from a site in Sheridan. These minis were living in horrid conditions with no reprieve from the mud and feces. They were all crammed in a small barn and left to fend for themselves and fight for what little food was provided for them. They are all covered with lice, mange and fleas, their feet were allowed to grow to horrible lengths. I’m afraid that some of the horse’s feet are beyond saving.

I have already had a farrier out to help me trim the worse of the feet and I will be able to get the balance of them done myself this week. The ones that we did yesterday were so long that we had to use a sawzall to cut through them. Below are a few photographs, be forewarned, they are graphic in nature.

Of course this all means that we need more donations of lice dust, wormer, equine senior and volunteer time to help bathe, brush, lice, trim, shave etc. 15 ponies. These little girls will be available for adoption as soon as they are stabilized, please pass the word.

Tow - Mater

Poor little Mater came to us a couple of weeks ago very, very sick and thin. His owner doesn't have the facilities or ability to give him all of the meds and care that he needs to get better so she brought him out here for rehabilitation. Normally I don't take in private horses but I just had to make an exception for this poor little guy. Mater's owner took him to a local vet who thinks that he has an internal abcess.

He has been here for two weeks now. I put him on a very strict diet and have had him on a prescribed antibiotics and worming regime. Finally, he is starting to show some signs of improvement in aditude and weight.

This photo is of Mater the day he arrived. He just would NOT eat so he was in pretty rough shape.

Here he is after one week - last Thurday. He had escaped from his stall while it was being cleaned and was raiding the hay pile when I took this quick shot before putting him back so please escuse all of the hazards around him.

We are hoping that Mater will make a full recovery from his illness but this is not the first time this little guy has been so sick during his short life. :(

Udated photos of the Sheridan horses

I try to get updated photos once a week for the first couple of months and then once a month until the horses are completely rehabilitated. Last Thursday we spent all day brushing and loving on all of the horses and then took photos. They were all still pretty hairy and rough looking in spite of the hours of brushing but you can still see a big improvement.

This is Boss. We've come to the conclusion that she is pregnant for SURE. Her belly gets bigger every day and she has a full bag of milk. Since we have no clue when she's due I keep her in a extra large stall at night and out on the grass during the day and we are keeping a hawks eye on her. The longer she hangs on to that foal the better.

Both Madelin and Giggles have white spots on their sides and backs so I'm pretty sure that Big Ruth is their damm.

Here is little Giggles. She has a really nice family that wants to foster her.

Madelin seems to be a barn favorit, the family that wants to foster Giggles also wants to foster Madelin.

Big Ruth has really come a long way. I have her on two high quality joint supplements. That along with free turnout and good food have greatly helped her back legs. The photo of her hips show how she is really starting to fill out. Big Ruth has someone acive with Mustangs and MOHR that is considering fostering her.

Pokey is still pretty pathetic looking but he has made a lot of progress. We brushed and brushed on this little guy and he still looks pretty ragged. Hopefully he will start shedding out that rough, dry coat so he starts looking better.

Tease has made a lot of progress. She is Pokey's damm, they are very similar in structure and markings and both of their coats still look bad but I'm sure that very soon they'll shed out and be lovely.

Studly

Here is an updated photo of my dear Studly.

I haven't ridden him yet as I'm waiting for the case to be closed and castration but he is definately a very personable horse from the ground. It's easy to forget that he is a stallion because he is so gentle.

I just realized that I didn't make a page for Studly. He is also one of the Sheridan horses and of COURSE he's a stallion. In spite of being in tact he is a really nice horse. I'm looking forward to him becoming a gelding SOON.

Studly actually wasn't in too bad of shape at rescue. He was a bit thin and needed his feet done but that's about it.

Hanging Out with the New Rescues

Having a sudden influx of seven new rescues is a lot of work, it's exhausting, hard work but it is SO WORTH IT when I get to see the improvements in the horses' additudes, movements and appetites. The Stallion (Studly) Has New Digs

Having a stallion on the place really puts a kink in things and is not safe when I've got so many people and kids here interacting with the horses. I wish I could just get him castrated right away but unfortunately that cannot be done until after the case is closed and who knows when that will happen; it could be 6-9 months unfortunately.

In order to have Studly in a safe environment there was already a large turnout area fenced in on the far side of my barn so pulled some of the tin off to make a large door, framed in a 12x24 walk-in sheltered area with 9 foot high walls, had several loads of slag from the steel mill hauled in so there will be no mud and built a cross fence so he cannot get anywhere near any of the other horses. Now he has a large, private turn out area with shelter to hang out.

The bummer thing about all this is of course the cost. I had all of the fencing and building materials but the slag cost was just over $500.00. That is a large chunk of money to come out of my meager checking account but having a nice, safe place for Studly to hang out was important to me and this area will of course be utilized for other rescue horses after Studly is done with it. I think it was a good move.

Boss

This mare is approximately 7 years old, she's a sweet girl but is kind of shy. She likes to push the other horses around a bit so we named her Boss.

As Boss continues to gain weight it has become quite clear that she is pregnant. Her stomach is getting bigger by the DAY I swear!! She has also has a big bag of milk rapidly forming. In spite of the surprise foal baking inside of Boss, she continues to gain weight all over her body and is rapidly looking very healthy. So, now we are on foal watch and the longer she lets that little foal bake the better.

ITS A BOY! 4-29-09

Last night Boss gave birth to a beautiful, healthy colt! Mom and baby are both doing great. The vet will be out this afternoon to draw blood and do a wellness check on them both just to make sure. Boss is a wonderful, attentive mother and is kind enough to allow me to mess around with her little newborn without worry.

I decided to name him PAL of my HART. PAL is for the PAL Ranch in Mcminnville, the owners of the ranch donated the use of the property and barns to my rescue and expressed a desire to adopt Boss and her unborn foal several weeks ago. PAL stands for People Animals Love. The HART part of his name of course is for HART Rescue.

I can't tell who the sire is because he's the spitting image of his dam!

Julie, I hope you like that name. I know I said you should name him but PAL of my HART just seemed so perfect! You and Hanna can give him a good barn name.

Big Ruth is a mustang mare. She has a freeze brand from when she was captured that tells us that she was two years old at capture in 2001, was foaled in 1999 and is from the Warm Springs herd. Ruth is a sweet mare, she shows signs of having stringhalt or some other sort of issue with her back legs. She seems to be getting better as she recovers.

Gerdi's a big girl, and she's moving like she never had a problem with her back legs. I think it was neurological from starvation instead of a joint problem. The weight tape says she's gained 200# since she's been here. Her total weight gain is way more than that.

She's looking just a little thin - no longer 'skinny'

Once she finishes her blotchy shedding job, she'll look pretty good.

She's getting a beefy butt, ... and she no longer has empty folds of skin hanging between her front legs.

Gerdi went to a gentling clinic sponsored by the Pacific Wild Horse Club today. She was the "evaluate what a rescue really knows" horse. She played dress-up. She didn't mind wearing the saddle much.

She was nervous about the pony-mule that was there. And Mocha the chubby mini had her intimidated.

There was a massage therapy clinic afterward - that was good, too.

Tease

Tease is a very sweet 7 year old mare whose Henneke body scale was a 2. She was so grateful to be rescued that she litterally lay down at my feet and looked up at me with such graditude that it broke my heart. She has some soundness issues but we are hoping that they well get better as she regains her strength.

Tease got bit on a lot because she was pretty low on the totem pole. She has a lot of dermatitis and rain rot that is healing nicely with the use of Tea Tree Products donated by Molly StHillaire and Eric Whitherspoon, there is already evidence of new hair comming in.

Pokey

Pokey is a sweet little 2 year old stallion, he came in rated a Henneke body score 1 1/2, his sheath was very swollen and sore from being so filthy and had yeast infection. He had a heavy worm load and very poor protien levels

Little Pokey was at the bottom of the pecking order and has scars to show for it. The poor little guys eats so slowely that I have to keep him separate from the others so I can make sure he gets his share of food.

Here is Pokey enjoying some time in the pasture.

He's got the sweetest face and kindest eyes, he is very gentle and loves attention.

Here is a new photo of Pokey all recovered and filled out! He is a very playful and mischievious little stinker. He has a bit of a funny way of moving his front legs, I like to say he walks like a duck. I have seen this before in young horses that I have rescued they have grown out of it and turned out to be really nice horses. I'm sure Pokey will be the same way.

Well it seems that my darling little Pokey is all grown up, his walk is good, he is all filled out and he is in with a dominant gelding learning some manners. He sure turned out to be a good looking horse!

To everyone who has been calling, emailing, stopping by to help, donate and support what I am doing here. All of your generous donations are so very much appreciated. I am completely overwhelmed with the outpouring of support. Thank you, thank you.

Today all of the horses were bathed and freed of their relentless mud balls. Some of them had to have their bellies shaved because the mud was so hard that it was pulling out their hair. All of the horses stood so patiently while we cleaned them up and when it was their turn to go into the arena they all bucked, farted and rolled in the sand. It was so good to see them moving happily around and they made it obvious that they were grateful to be free of the mud/poop balls that they had been imprisoned with for so long.

I am completely overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and deeply appreciate everything that has been done for these horses. Thank you so much and God bless you all.

We have Seven More Horses in for Rehabilitation

It's official, my barn is completely full to capacity with the seven new horses that just moved in.

These horses were in a hell of a mess and really needed some help.

With every rescue case I am involved in, I learn new things.

With every case I think, "Okay, now I've seen it all." Every time, I'm wrong.

There is always something new that I hadn't seen before.

And this is it. A Henneke Body Scale 1 that is still alive. Wow.

I've rescued a lot of horses in my lifetime, so many that I've lost count but I'm sure it's over 200. Never EVER have I seen a horse be as grateful and actually show their graditude like these did. It moved me like nothing has ever mooved me before. One mare, after being moved into my arena acutally walked up to me and layed down right there in front of me. If I hadn't stepped back she would have been laying on my feet. She just layed there and looked at me and if she could talk I swear she'd be saying, "Thank you so much for getting us out of there."

Today was FUN!

I got to spend all day out in my barn and had lots of visiters comming and going throughout the entire day and of course the phone rings nearly non stop. But that is all okay, it's nice when people come to help with the animals, donate much needed supplies and consider adopting one or two of the residents.

I've been gathering together a bunch of tack to take to the Canby Tack Sale to sell and raise money for the rescue. I'm hoping to sell enough to pay to get some dental work done on a couple of my older horses and possibly buy some panels for temporary stalls and a couple of water troughs. If you plan on going to the sale, make sure you stop by my booth and see what we've got to sell. If you have any extra tack you would like to donate to be sold to raise funds, let me know. I can either come pick it up or you could drop it off here and visit all of the horses.

Buttermilk Buscuit - Adopted

Buttermilk Buscuit is the last of the Highway 47 minis to be rescued. She is a sweet, young little mare who is a little shy but is definately willing and wanting to be your freind. She gets along great with Frosty and the two of them share a large stall.

Buttermilk is a very correct little mini and would make a really nice cart pony or pet. Out of all of the little minis that have been rescued, this little mare is probably the one that I would choose to keep. I'm sure she will be adopted fast because she is so cute.

Howdy. I'll have to get some new pics of "Little Miss Summertime Sienna" (aka Buttermilk). She's made friends with all my big horses save one (that mare is pastued by herself so Sienna can enjoy company & stay safe). She's mostly shed out, but still has a very furry fat belly. She thought I could have come up with better things to do yesterday when I brushed it. She's quite good about her face & back, but still fussy about her underbelly/sides & rump. If I really get with it sometime I'll have to video her running with the herd....she seems to be in pure bliss when everyone takes off across the pasture & she actually keeps up with my big horses! sometimes she'll just rip around on her own ;-)

These are a few of her this weekend. Not sure if she's just got a little grass belly or pregnant...??? Time will tell, she's at pasture 24/7 for now. She's not "fat", just a little belly & she's super active so I'll leave her on pasture as long as she seems to keep conditioned w/o getting over weight. She has lots of Dun factor & now that she's shed out you can see zebra stripe on her legs...very fun.

Red Bone - Deceased

Red Bone came to us with Snoot and Big Mare. She was a sweet older little mare who weasled her way into my heart on the first day. Red Bone was named after her condition when she came here, she was red and very bony. She was extremely emaciated, covered in lice and fleas and full of worms. Poor Red Bone was in such bad shape that I was afraid she would not recover, she was so week she could barely walk and dragged her back feet when she did. Most of her hair fell off when I gave her a bath so she was mostly bald. I was very pleased to watch this girls progress as she recovered. Sadly Red Bone coliced and was put out of her missery. A necropsy was done and a hard ball of dried hay was found causing the colic.

Rest in peast dear Red Bone.

Snoot - Adopted

Snoot came to us along with Big Mare and Red Bone in May of 2008. She was thin, covered in lice and fleas and full of worms. Although she had been in the same pasture with Big Mare and Red Bone, she wasn't nearly as thin as they were as she was at the top of the pecking order.

Snoot is a nice little mare with a lot of personality who really lives up to her name. She is well started in her training and we are currently riding her every day to further her education and make her into a nice open show and trail riding horse.

UPDATE - March 8, 2009
This little mare is really turning out to be a great horse. The family that adopted her has been keeping her here so I can help them with her training. I've been riding her some myself too and she really is a smart horse. We've been working on a lot of arena work and just recently we've taken her out on some trail rides and she did AWSOME! She even crossed the river and when over a couple of bridges without even batting an eye.

Big Mare - ADOPTED

Big Mare came to us with Snoot and Red Bone in May of 2008. This girl was named after her size, she is just a big ole' girl. We also refer to her as Grandma, Big Girl, Big Mamma and Sweat Heart.

Big Mare and her pasture mates had been starved and abused by their owner. When I got her she was extremely emaciated, covered in lice and fleas and full of worms. After several weeks of intense feeding and care she made a full recovery. She quickly became one of my favorite horses here at the rescue, I just couldn't help but to love her personality. She is extremely well trained and has found a new home with a loving family that is looking forward to taking care of her for the rest of her life.

UPDATE March 8, 2009
Big Mare turned out to be extremely will broke and very gentle for anyone to ride. I loved riding her and she was very good for giving riding lessons to young children. She turned out to be a favorite in the barn among all of the kids. She was adopted out to a very nice family who absolutely adores her.

Unfortunately I have been informed that Big Mare was put down because of complications from found. Rest in peace sweet Big Mare, it was a pleasure having you in my life.

State of the Union

Our bad economy continues to add more animal victims. Every day my phone rings and email box fills with cries for help from people who cannot afford to feed their animals anymore or who want to report animals they have seen that are hurt, starving or abused. It's heartbreaking when I have to turn so many people away because my place is full to capacity. I am hoping that the 4 minis rescued right before the big storm hit in December will be placed soon so their stalls will open up for more animals in need.

My 501 c 3 has finally been filed with the State of Oregon the name of my rescue is H.A.R.T. (Horse/Animal Rescue Team) so starting with 2009 all donations of supplies, professional services and money are tax deductible. Cash donations received are used to pay medical bills and to provide feed and needed medicine for the rescued horses. In lieu of sending any money to me, I actually prefer that money be sent directly to Carlton Vet Services on behalf of HART. The vet will let me know when money comes in and I can provide donors with a receipt for tax purposes. The reason for this is you can be assured that 100% of your donation will be used for the medical care of the rescued horses. Carlton Vet also provides a discount to HART for their services on rescue animals and I really want to thank them for that! If you would rather donate supplies, we can always use Equine Senior (often abandoned horses are older horses), other grain, Beat Pulp, Alfalfa Pellets, Stall Pellets, Hay Cubes, wormer, and joint supplements. Additionally, I accept donations of any horse related items, what cannot be directly used for the rescued horses is sold and the funds are used to purchase feed and supplies. All items and money donated will now be tax deductible.

We finally finished one of our animal cruelty cases in Yamhill County. I have been caring for the horses since last May and just as soon as I get the paperwork from the Sheriff's Office I can put them here on my blog for all to see. One of the horses already has a family that is adopting her and I am hoping to find a good home for the other one soon. She is one of my favorite horses here so I'll be pretty picky as to where she goes. Well......I'm actually pretty picky about where all of my rescue horses go but this one IS special to me.

I opened up some more space out in the old barn so I could foster some pot bellied pigs and a duck for the Humane Society. I had my doubts about taking in pigs but they are sure a lot easier to take care of then the horses! The duck is so cute, he is best friends with one of the pigs and the two are inseparable. When the pig lies down to sleep, the duck crawls up on his back and sleeps with him. He also preens his little pig friends keeping them presentable for visitors. Because there is an open case on these guys I cannot feature photos of them on my blogs, sorry. You can come and visit them, just give me a call and I’m happy to make some time for you.

I continue to enjoy getting updates from all of the adoptive homes about the horses that I have placed with them. Please, keep the emails, phone calls and a picture coming it’s really nice to see how happy and healthy all of the horses that I have worked so hard to save are.

We got some more ponies!

With a lot of patience, negotiations and time we finally were able to get 5 more ponies from the Highway 47 site. The conditions out there are still not good but they are definatley a LOT better then they have been in the past. There are now only 10 ponies left on the site and we are hoping to talk her out of at least 5 of those. All of the remaining ponies have a large pen with shelter and we are continuing to check to make sure that they are all being fed, wormed and cared for.

Rudy - ADOPTED

Rudy is a cute, very pathetic little stallion that just steals your heart the instant you meet him. He has the pretiest blue eyes I have ever seen and a sweet personality to go with them. Rudy loves to be brushed and pet, he just enjoys any kind of attention that we give him. He is best freinds with Frosty so we hope that they will go to a new home together.

Rudy was castrated in late April and adopted out along with his best friend Frosty to a wonderful home.

Eclipse - ADOPTED

Eclipse is an aged stallion with the sweetest personality. One of my volunteers fell in love with Eclipse the first time we went out to the site and would not let me rest until I got him out of there. His forlock is so long and thick that you can't see his face unless you move it aside and his mane is incredible. Eclipse is already adopted out but he is going to stay here until he is more healthy.

Frosty - Adopted

Frosy is an older mare, she is extremely shy and acts like she's been abused at some point in her life. We are afraid she might be pregnant. Frosty was brutally savaged by a stallion right before we got her so she is reluctant to be with other horses but she gets along really well with Rudy.

I have been spending a lot of one on one time with Frosty in an attempt to get her over her shyness. She is more comfortable with being handled and is easier to catch now but she is still a little fearful. I think with more time and patience she will come around quite nicely.

Ice

Ice is an aproximately 10 year old stallion that was used as a herd sire. He is a sweet, friendly little guy who really cries out for some attention. He appreciates any and all loving he is offered. I really like this little horse and think that with some time and patience would be a nice childs pony. He is going to need to have his teeth done and be castrated.

The onset of winter always brings forth an abundance of horses that need new homes or an outreach of help. This winter it is especially bad with the economy being poor, high feed costs and hundreds of people loosing their jobs. I and a few other local reputable rescues here in Oregon work together as much as we can to find homes and help for these poor horses that are suffering. I have added a few more horses to my “Outside Horses Needing Homes” section this rescue website. Please take a few moments to look over the horses that are listed there and forward this to everyone you know that might be willing to take another horse on. The State of the Rescue
My personal rescue, “Jamie Cheslock Horse Rescue” has been kind of quiet here lately. All of the minis have been placed in permanent and foster homes and are really doing well. I enjoy getting frequent updates from everyone especially if it has PICTURES! My husband has recently been laid off so we have to be really careful with our money. If we do get more rescues in I will be forced to ask for donations and help. I hate asking for donations, I’ve run my rescue for YEARS having never asked or accepted donations of any kind but this year has forced me to be humble and not only accept but also ask for donations. Good news is my good friend has been gracious enough to complete all of the paperwork for my nonprofit status 501 © 3 and once that is all approved by the State all donations of supplies, money and time will be tax deductible. Along with that, I will be able to apply for grant and trust money to fund the rescue.

Current Cases

Minis
We are still working towards getting more of the Minis out of there but of course this is a very delicate situation. There are rumors that pigeon fever has hit the minis, this had not been verified yet. If you are on the waiting list for a mini, please be patient I’m going everything I can to get as many out of there as soon as possible but I just cannot jeopardize the health and safety of the current residences of my rescue. Once I am able to make SURE that they don’t have pigeon fever or it has cleared up I will get right in there.

Lightning
Lightning’s foot is almost completely healed, take a look at Lightning to see the progress he has made. This little horse is really a fun guy to work with as he is extremely intelligent and enjoys all of the attention you are willing to give him. He is looking for a permanent home.

Carlton Horses
These girls are both doing great and should be ready to be adopted out by the end of the month if all goes as planned.

Just Plunking Along

Not too much new and exciting going on with the rescue here in the past couple of weeks. It's actually really nice to have some quiet time. Lightnings foot continues to get better, it's amazing how fast it's healing. The two Carlton mares are doing great, we are just waiting for them to be released by the Sheriff's Office so I can adopt them out.

All of the minis have either been adopted out or are in foster care. I have a small list of people who would like to adopt minis once I get more in. At this point I don't really know when that will be because we suspect that they have pigeon feaver out there.

Tonight I'm meeting with the Sheriff to go look at a horse that was reported.

That's about it!

Your life here was short but I did everything I could to make it as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Having you in my barn was an honor. Every time I walked in, you serenaded me with your beautiful voice and it brought back fond memories of Jackie, the first donkey that I had who was also a rescue from 20 years ago. I am at peace with knowing that you are no longer in pain. Even though I only got to know you for just a short amount of time you will be remembered.

More Much Appreciated Help From Volunteers

We had more visitors here from some local mini fans. They brought their equine vaccuume and spent a great deal of time trying to vaccuume the lice eggs and dermatitis off of Mocha and Tornado. The eggs proved to be tougher than any vaccuume or comb so they ended up having to roach off both horse's manes. Even though neither of those horses had been handled much they both were really good about standing there and allowing everyone to vaccuume, clip, bathe and brush them. After all that hard work they bothed looked like champions.

Later in the day, I got a call from a great family that wanted to adopted a couple of my minis. They came and looked at Mocha and Tornado and decided to take them both. They showed me pictures of their pasture and housing facilities they have set up and it all looked great. These people came recommended by one of my volunteers who knows them personally so I am confident that they will provide an excellent home. I made sure they had plenty of feed supplies to get them started and sent them on their way. They don't have a lot of experience with horses but their grand daughter does so I'll keep in contact with them to make sure it's all working out.

One thing that I like to make sure of is that all of my rescued horses have good homes. All I really ask of my adoptive families is that they provide adequate shelter, safe pasure, good food and lots of love. I follow up with all of the horses that I adopt out to make sure that eveyone is happy and I make sure that everyone knows that I have a revolving door here. If for ANY REASON you can't keep the horse or it doesn't work out just bring it back NO QUESTIONS ASKED and I will take it back. I'd rather take any horse back then have the horse or the people unhappy.

I am a firm believer that my prescreening process, no questions asked return policy and the fact that all of my rescues are FREE are what makes my rescue so sucessful for me, the horses and my adoptive homes.

We Get A Lot Of Visitors

Every day there are people comming and going. Some to come look at the rescues, some to drop off supplies for them, some to donate some time working with them, cleaning stalls, brushing etc. A lot of people bring a friend or two with them and this is all good because the more people that know about what I'm doing here, the more support I get. The more support I get, the more horses I can help.

Tornado continues to do well since his visit with the dentist Wednesday.
Mocha is getting a little more friendly.
Stormy is still a little stinker but he's fun to pet and play with.
Lightning needs his bandage changed today.

Today promises to be another busy day, I like staying busy so this is a good thing!

I'm really worried about poor Tornado

He is not eating well and in fact won't even touch his grain. I tried soaking some alfalfa for him, he picked at that for awhile and this morning I noticed that he didn't even eat that. I'm afraid that he needs to have a bunch of dental work done because we can feel that he has sharp points. I only have $200.00 in the account at the vet clinic so I'm going to try to raise some more funds to cover a dental for the poor little guy.

Last night I hand fed Tornado some soaked beet pulp and alfalfa and he really liked it so I gave him plenty in his feed tub to eat throughout the night.

Dr. Ross Cleland comes at 4:00 p.m. today to take a look at Tornado. On a good note, when I went out this morning to do chores I noticed that Tornado had eaten most of his grass hay and all of his alfalfa and beet pulp.

Spending Some Time Enjoying the new Residences

Every day around our ranch is a whirlwind of activity it seems that there are always people coming and going, phone ringing, emails flying and obviously stuff to do. With all of this constantly going on it’s hard to find the time to just sit down and spend quality time with each of the horses that are here so I decided to try to mix things up a bit. In this photo are the people that own Socrates a horse that I had in for training. They had come to watch me ride their horse, take him home and pick apples to take home and can. Since they had all of those children I gave each one of them a brush and let them HAVE AT IT brushing and enjoying all of the little horses. Everyone got brushed, walked and loved on while they were here.

Be sure to look at our newest rescue, Woody. He is also from the Highway 47 site.

My Adoption Requirements

I keep my rescue operation small and simple; this is my key to success and not going broke while trying to save animals. Most of the time my adoption fee is $200.00 if there is vet work that needs to be done when you adopt the horse, that fee goes directly to that cost and it is done here before the horse is taken home. This could be castration, dental work etc.)

In order to adopt one of my horses I just have a few simple rules and requirements.

o You must provide me with references from your vet, your farrier, a friend and a neighbor. I will also do a site visit and interview to make sure that the horse you wanting to adopt will fit into your situation and is suitable for your horse knowledge and experience.
o You must remain in contact with me either by phone or email on occasion because I like to make sure that you and the horse are okay.
o If for any reason you cannot or do not want to care for the horse any longer, bring it back no questions asked. I’d rather take a horse back then leave you stuck with more then you can handle or have it passed off to someone who might not take good care of it.
o You must promise to provide the horse with a habitat that has adequate fencing, shelter, food and water. I will do a pre-adoption site visit to make sure that your facility passes muster.
o You must promise to provide the horse with quality vet and farrier care at all times.
o You must promise to love and care for the horse.
o You must complete and sign the adoption application/agreement.

Stormy

Stormy is a 4 month old orphan who lost his mother at 2 months of age. He was out on his own with the large herd of horses and was at the very bottom of the pecking order. Stormy was nearly catatonic with I got him and I had to carry him from out in the field to the car. He rode home in the back of a Yukon. I put him in with my mini Gigi for company and she adopted him as her own foal. Stormy is not available for adoption at this time.

Stormy is doing really well and getting along grat with his new adoptive mother Gigi. He has gotten a lot more friendly and wolfs down all of his food. I've been trimming as much toe as I can off his feet so he'll stand up on them better and I am seeing some improvement.

Jitterbug is a sweet little 3 year old sorrel mare with an eye infection. She wasn’t one of the horses that was sorted out for us to take that day but luckily I was able to talk her owner into letting us have her. She was in with a little stallion so with that and the shape of her stomach we suspect that she is pregnant. Thank you to Molly and Shelby St Hillaire for adopting this sweet little mare.

Tornado is a 2-3 year old black stallion. He is painfully thin and will require a lot of good food and loving care to get up to a healthy weight. Tornado is very shy so he will have to be handled with loving care so he can begin trusting humans.

Tornado hasn't been eating well and really didn't look right so I had a vet out to look at him today. She said he needs to have some serious dental work done and soon so I'm hoping that there will be some money in our account for the Mini Rescue at Carlton Vet so we can get that done soon.

TC is a middle aged (12-16) grulla mare who used to be some lucky child’s 4-H horse. It’s such a shame that after all those years of loyalty to her humans she ended up in this horrible situation.

Farra - In Foster Care

Farra is an older palomino mare (25-30) with scars on her back from untreated rain rot. She is extremely thin and still lingering rain rot that will need treatment. Farra’s main is really thick and she is looking for a little girl that would like to brush it for her. She is really sweet and loves any attention she can get. Farra needs to have her teeth done so she can eat better.

Farra had her teeth done by Dr. Ross Cleland of Carlton Veterinary Hospital, he had to work on her for a very long time because some of her teeth were 2-4 inches long. He said it was the worse dental case he had ever seen and that she will probably never be able to close her mouth correctly.

Jasmine was at the bottom of the pecking order in a large herd, has some bite scars and is very thin because she was able to get very little food. It is amazing this adorable little girl ( 5 to 6 years old) survived. Jasmine is an appaloosa mare and her markings make her look like a little fawn and she is easily frightened. Because she has had to fight for her life, she does bite but she also will take food from your hand without biting and just needs TLC and some one on one attention

Cuppie is a loving and gentle little grey lady of approximately 18 to 20 years. She is very affectionate and good to other horse. Her biggest problem is that she has never had dental care and needs her teeth floated so she can eat, gain some weight and finally have a happy life

Lightening

Lightening was rescued from a junk yard. He came to us with a bad injury on his rear pastern that had been left unattended so a large growth of proud flesh set in that was so bad, it deformed his hoof.

This injury would have been a minor inconvenience if his owner had only taking care of it. Becuase of the negligence of an ignorant owner, Lightening had to have surgery to remove the growth and has to have his bandages changed every 3 to 4 days.

This is what the injury looks like 1 week after surgery:

Lightening will not be up for adoption until after he has healed up more unless someone with a lot of bandaging experience asks for him.

I did another bandage change last night and it went really well with drugs on board of course. This is what the foot looks like now.

The vet had a look at the photos of Lightings foot after the last bandage change and order me to wash it with a very weak betadine solution with each bandage change otherwise continue as I'm doing. She said so far it looked really good. Not only is his injury looking good but his weight is up quite a bit too. He is almost to a good, healthy weight.

I have been able to do two bandage changes on Lighting without having to sedate him. The wound continues to look better with each change.
